Thank you to Wikipedia, Google and other influential forces who are staging a protest on January 18th, 2012 . It’s important to control piracy of intellectual properties but the U.S. Government is planning to go about it in a way that amounts to censorship and will cripple online providers. Websites should not be at risk of censorship simply because they LINKED to a page with pirated material.

The administration of President Barack Obama cast some doubt over the legislation’s prospects on Jan. 14, saying in a blog post that it wouldn’t support measures that encourage censorship, undermine cyber security or disrupt the structure of the Internet.

The blog post, signed by three White House technology officials, marked the administration’s most significant foray into a fight between content creators and Web companies that has been playing out in Congress.

Obama, who draws support from both Hollywood and the Internet industry, is trying to “steer a line” between the competing interests, Kersh said.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE from HOLLYWOOD MOGUL…

At HOLLYWOOD MOGUL, our core business is that of creating concepts for television and movies. It’s INTEGRAL TO OUR SUCCESS THAT PIRACY BE STOPPED. But the wording in the anti-piracy bills need to change because of this:

Hollywood NEEDS the internet. Movie studios NEED to promote their films on the internet. A growing number of viewers don’t even watch cable TV anymore, preferring the likes of Netflix or legal network streaming. The escalating internet audience is outrageous and movie studios have yet to truly harness this abundant market. For instance, during the blackout Google collected 7 million signatures on its petition. Also, Wikipedia’s 24 hour protest page was seen by 162 million visitors. [source] That’s a powerful (and fast) target audience.

Here’s an even more striking number: In December, Google averaged 400 million searches per day. Compare that to only 111 million viewers of last year’s Super Bowl game. [source] Clearly the internet has a more powerful voice for publicity than any other medium. The entertainment industry would do well to stay on the good side of this powerful vehicle for promoting its films and music. But if website owners stop promoting movies and music because of the fear of total censorship (plus a shutdown of it’s core business) then the internet companies won’t be promoting films/music much longer…

Imagine a world (this is for you Hollywood) where the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Google, Wordpress and Wikipedia all enforce a “no promote media” rule just so they can avoid legal problems. Nobody would ever be allowed to tweet or blog about the latest movie they saw and share the trailer online. If someone even tried to promote a media sample, they’d get censored and warned.

Hollywood needs the internet. The wording in the bill has to change for ALL OF OUR SAKES… for the internet companies, for the small websites like ours, and for the Hollywood Movie Studios… because without internet promotion of their movies, big studios will see a certain and marked decline in their box office dollars.

This is why we support the SOPA protests… AND… we support HOLLYWOOD!

Brad Pitt relied on the use of a cane all evening due a recent ski injury. On the subject of Brad being honored with the Festival's Desert Palm Achievement Award, good friend George Clooney accused Pitt of courting the "sympathy vote." … but that was all in fun because Clooney himself would go on to win the festival's Chairman's Award for his work in 'The Ides of March' and 'The Descendants.' Moneyball is also being nominated for 4 Golden Globe Awards, including “best motion picture” … “best performance” (for Brad) … and “best performance in a supporting role” for Jonah Hill.
