Second vingette: when I interviewed the Dalai Lama's personal assistant , I discovered that he was a great chanter with a rich resonant voice so I filmed
chants before theinterview while he rang the most beautiful Tibetan bells. it was
just enough to enhance the interview with graceful authentic sounds of Tibet. This does not preclude needing the genius of others but with imagination and to stay within budget for a short until major funding appears... use everything that
is expressed by that individual in the scene.HE was also master of the sacred art of the mandala so I did an interesting opening shot of a poster of his mandala with his face superimposed within the mandala. Then I discovered that he was an actor... was offered largest role in kundun, chose to take a lessor role so that he might serve as advisor to Martin Scorces and the
spiritual director to tibetans on set. I then noticed that he was featured in all press releases from tri star i believe, so I did slow individual shots of all of those photographs fromthe film and interviewed him in his own temple... my set!!
The entire shoot originated from one sourse, I did the lighting with candles to try to replicate the inside of a tibetan tent and that gave me a whole short allowing for divine inspiration here and there.Thought this might help someone without funding realize their vision on a shoestring.There is always a way!
